Jekku wrote:True, this is the point about the commercialism of the CC product. You see, we as a bunch of guys can't be the violators of the law if we'd like to see the movie among ourselves. But as we have here an entrepeneur willing to show the flick for us with his gear for a profit the law will be compromised, no?

Well, the owner would not be selling you star wreck, but he would be selling the service of the theater. It's not his concern what you are watching. And such a movie night would be concidered private use by law and it would be legal no matter what the movie was.

Oh and the company name is Energia, not Energy. Same meaning, different spelling.

See? No matter how big a party and how much the arrangements cost - as long as the sole purpose is to relax and not to make profit.

Rent a stadium, hire Michael Jackson for a warm up and sell booze at wholesale prise during event - no problem as long as you make no profit.:P Add a few cheerleaders selling pop corn for their camp weekend and you've just become a criminal...

Just kidding - but still serious. I noticed it still IS a bit difficult to tell what else one could offer aside the film. Renting a cinema or acquiring other accessories aside the movie and dividing the cost doesn't sound bad as such. But when does it go overboard? Is it when the cinema owner actually earns $100 extra for the night's rent? Or is it the case when you actually got a stadium for free and Michael Jackson only took $1 from each 10000 spectators because you happen to be his buddy? What if he took the normal 20$ per each? Wouldn't he be making profit on the film then? (I presume no one primarily came to see Michael but the film, of course!! :D )

I think the CC licenses and the "Deeds" tell quite clearly, what you are allowed to do in common cases. Of course there are situations where the license doesn't directly apply, but then you can always contact the authors to ask what they think and perhaps you can come up with some arrangement. The same uncertainty applies to written law and that is why we have courts.

Lanshow

Postby L_A_G » Sat Oct 22, 2005 16:58

I got a screening for SW6 arranged for my schools LAN party, unfortunately an unauthorized entered the school building and stole a computer projector (there’s one hanging from the sealing in every class). The doors where supposed to be locked, but some people went outside every hour to take a tobacco break, they then forgot to lock the door. The screening was supposed to be held at the schools auditorium that has a really good projector and a really good sound system that can even be compared to the ones in movie theaters. But as you may guess, the activities were canceled and everyone had to leave before 10pm (it was 8pm when this message was announced)

I_A_G: Double post, oops?

We're also doing a fan production (even more than one) here in the Netherlands and I just wanted to give a few comments on the licensing issue.

Originally, Viacom (the company that owns Paramount, not Paramount itself) had a VERY strict policy on derivative works. Anything that was on video and had two nacelles and a saucer section was considered infringement of copyright laws. That kind of changed when Eugene Roddenberry Jr. got involved in New Voyages.
New Voyages started out just like you guys with a first episode on DVD and the showing at conventions and such. That sparked Eugene's interest (being a bit of the main man in TrekUnited) and he decided to support the project. That did need some changes in Paramount's thinking of Trek licensing, and they adopted a policy which stated that you can use our works, as long as you're making no profit. In that way even using the name 'Star Trek' was considered legal use when a non-profit work is concerned. We've talked to someone at Paramount NL regarding this. As long as you put the standard copyright message (e.g. "... Star Trek and all related works are (c) and (tm) Paramount Corporation. Based upon Star trek...") somewhere on the movie's site and on the publications (movie credits, DVD's)
The very beautiful thing is now that even all the actors in ST are very excited over all the fan filming (especially Denise considering her involvement in Trekkies 2) as can be seen on last summer's Pasadena Grand Slam, which was Hidden Frontier's big appearance after making 5 seasons in secrecy. They're even on IMDB now!

Could we get an update of the current number of download please?

Seemed the topic got steered away from the original. Tx.

The film created an internet phenomenon with over 3 million downloads in two months time.

I'm pretty sure they can. Star Wreck is a bigger project and (IMO) a higher quality production overall. It's also been getting some crazy awesome promotion.

Couple that with the fact that Revelations came around the last Star Wars boom, and that Star Wreck has been earning it's spurs without any related Star Trek news to help it out and I think Wreck has a certain degree of self-sufficiency that Revelations lacked.

Last estimate I heard was 3.5 + 0.6 Million downloads.
